IV sedation for Oral Surgery in Memphis, TN
-
Salmon Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers three anesthesia options: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation. The choice depends on the procedure, your medical history, and the preoperative exam.
Dr. Bryant Salmon, DMD, MD, is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. His six-year residency at the University of Kentucky included training in anesthesiology, general surgery, and related hospital services. He holds staff privileges at Regional One Health, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Methodist-Le Bonheur Memphis Hospitals.

Local anesthesia numbs the surgical area. You remain awake. It is often used for simpler extractions and for patients who prefer to drive themselves, when the procedure allows it.
-
Nitrous oxide is used with local anesthesia for patients who want a lighter level of relaxation. Your surgeon will say whether you need a driver.

IV sedation is available for wisdom teeth removal, extractions, implant placement, and other office procedures. A preoperative consultation and physical examination are required before IV anesthesia.
Before IV sedation:
• Have nothing to eat or drink for eight hours before surgery.
• A responsible adult must come with you, stay in the office during the procedure, and drive you home.
• Do not operate a motor vehicle for 24 hours after surgery.
• Bring a list of every medication, and tell the office about diabetes, high blood pressure, heart valves, artificial joints, and any blood thinner or aspirin.
Patients under 18 must have a parent or guardian at the consultation.

Written instructions and procedure videos are part of every surgical visit. An after-hours phone number is given for urgent questions. Call 901-767-0088 during office hours.
